A small Gothic church constructed around 1230, Santa Maria della Spina stands along the Arno River in Pisa. Originally called Santa Maria di Pontenovo, it was named after a nearby bridge that collapsed in the 15th century and was never rebuilt. The church was later expanded after 1325, reflecting the Pisan Gothic architectural style with intricate stonework and pointed arches.
The name "della Spina" refers to a thorn believed to be from Christ’s crown of thorns, once housed inside the church. The building’s compact size contrasts with its detailed exterior, featuring ornate sculptures and decorative elements typical of the period, making it a notable example of medieval religious architecture in Pisa.
